The question was asked by my daughter, a teacher in a Rio Rancho middle school, given the opportunity to design a new approach to schools, how would I go about it. Since the constraint was one of pure architectural (or urban) form and relationships, I took this approach: let the school be a miniature city, with all the good qualities a city can have including neighborhoods, a downtown, good circulation, lots of opportunities for people to meet other people, people to watch people, people having many things to see and do between classes and before and after school; let windows be storefronts and let the activities inslde be visible (merchandising); create nodes, landmarks, paths, edges; and provides lots of shade and seating (It is New Mexico, afterall!) A start? Maybe....
